Ama K. Abebrese, a Ghanaian actress, has spoken out about the obstacles that performers endure both within and outside of the industry.
She told Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on the channel’s late afternoon show, Changes, that acting demands resilience because of the obstacles they face in getting a movie job.

“I hear ‘I want to act’ all the time. Being an actor is one of the most disappointing things you can be. It doesn’t matter what part of the world you’re in. Let’s say that you’ve auditioned for something you think you’ve done so great, and sometimes you can go to your first, second, or third; they can call you back like four times, and by the fourth time you think you’ve started cashing the check, knowing you’ve got the role, and then you don’t get it. So, it builds you up and pushes you down. So, you need to have a level of tough skin because it gets to a point where you start taking it personal,” she said.
The actress also revealed that she has attended more auditions than the number of films she has appeared in since the beginning of her career. She described how, despite her experience, she was turned down for over twenty parts over the course of a year.
But she never gives up, despite the fact that it is usually an unpleasant and painful experience, acknowledging that it is part of the job. Instead, it helps her hone her skills and recover stronger. It also pushes her to continue attending auditions as soon as she learns about a project.
“If I didn’t get it, it just meant sometimes it’s not for me and you; there are times when you find out who got the role, and then you now understand why you were not given the role,” she further noted.
The actress stated that she has only appeared in roughly twenty films in her career, but she is OK with this because the majority of the films have had an impact and gained traction. She stated that her emphasis is on the quality of the films rather than quantity.
Ama K. Abebrese has acted in ‘Beast of No Nation,’ and she claims she auditioned for the job. She also appeared in award-winning local and international films such as Sinking Sands, Double-Cross, and Azali, among others.
