AFCON 2023: Senegal starts title defense with 3-0 win over Gambia

Senegal have kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title defense with a commanding victory against Gambia on Monday afternoon, showcasing their determination to retain the coveted championship.

Despite a good performance in the previous edition, Gambia was unable to contain the prowess of the 2021 AFCON champions.

Pape Gueye opened the scoring for the Teranga Lions in the fourth minute, establishing Senegal’s dominance from the start.

The woes for Gambia deepened as Ibrahima Cisse received a red card on the eve of halftime, reducing their squad and providing Senegal with an opportunity to capitalize.

Returning in the second half with a revitalised spirit, Senegal continued their onslaught. Lamine Camara scored in the 52nd minute to increase the advantage, adding a second and the team’s third to seal a well-deserved victory for the defending champions.

With three points secured, Senegal now leads Group C, eagerly awaiting the outcome of the second game between Cameroon and Guinea.

The dominant performance in their opening match sends a strong message as Senegal aims to maintain their reign as AFCON champions.
