Portugal’s Euro 2024 campaign ended in a spectacular fashion in Hamburg, with a penalty shootout defeat to France.
Following Joao Felix’s mistake, Theo Hernandez converted the winning penalty kick, propelling Les Bleus into the semi-finals.
This will most likely be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final Euros participation, since he announced his retirement earlier this week. The 39-year-old captain failed to produce the fairytale ending, squandering a critical opportunity in overtime.
Both Ronaldo and his French counterpart Kylian Mbappe were largely quiet throughout the match, with Mbappe forced off due to an injury in extra time. The game itself was a tense affair with few clear opportunities, with Portugal edging the chances.
However, penalties proved to be Portugal’s undoing for the second consecutive game. Despite overcoming Slovenia via a shootout, their luck ran out against France.
The victory sets up a mouthwatering semi-final clash between France and Spain in Munich on Tuesday.
