Hearts of Oak and Karela United played in the Ghana Premier League in a thrilling match that ended in a 1-1 draw at the Aliu Mahama Stadium thanks to Richmond Ayi’s late penalty denial and save.
There was no shortage of activity during Saturday’s match in Tamale, and either team could have won. Karela United got off to a flurry of activity, eager to snap a losing record that dated back to October 24. They were up in just six minutes when Owusu Boakye, who wasn’t the tallest player on the pitch, scored from close range and celebrated with his arms wide extended, evoking the famous gesture of Real Madrid legend Jude Bellignham.

But Hearts of Oak rose to the occasion, applying more and more pressure until they equalized shortly before the half. With the ball at his feet, in-form forward Hamza Issah headed it into the net for his third goal of the year while remaining untouched.
The action-packed second half continued as Karela United was given a late penalty. But Richmond Ayi saved the day for Hearts of Oak, making an important save to maintain parity.
The drama didn’t finish there, though, as Hearts of Oak had a solid case for a penalty deep into stoppage time after it was evident that the ball had struck a Karela United defender’s hand. To their dismay, Hearts of Oak players fiercely objected to the referee’s decision, but Andrews Awurisa stood by it.
The draw leaves Hearts of Oak still without an away win this season, with their only two wins coming at home. Meanwhile, Karela United continues to face challenges in the league, seeking to regain their winning form. The game showcased the intensity and unpredictability that makes football such a captivating sport for fans.
