In a recent interview with American media personality Steve Stoute, Nigerian musician Davido talked openly about his early career.
He admitted that after starting Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), he operated it for four years without receiving any payment from his artists.
In the early years, DMW wasn’t just a label; to Davido, it was more like a family. His main priority was to help his friends and other artists. He paid for things like assistance, housing, and video creation without looking for a profit.
Davido understood the value of adopting a more business-oriented strategy as the popularity of Afrobeats spread around the globe. Since then, he has highlighted this to his newly signed DMW artists, emphasizing the necessity of treating music as a business and generating cash.
Davido’s dedication to helping people without expecting immediate financial reward paid off, as Mayorkun, Peruzzi, and Dremo flourished under his leadership.
Davido is currently working on a documentary that will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the difficulties he encountered in the music business in addition to sharing these experiences.
He wants to encourage young artists by showing how much effort and perseverance went into making this documentary.
