After Benjamin Asare’s outstanding performances in training and World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Madagascar, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has announced that Asare is currently Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.
In his first two games as a goalie for the national team, the Hearts of Oak goalie kept two clean sheets.
Even though the next match is months away, Addo said Asare is still the team’s top choice in goal following Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“At this point, the next game is in June, but at the moment, I think he [Benjamin Asare] is number one. We have decided on him. He did well in training,” Addo said.
However, the coach emphasized that goalkeepers are still in fierce battle, with Joe Wollacott and Lawrence Ati Zigi both vying for a starting position.
“Like I said, it is not that there’s a huge gap between him and the other goalkeepers. We have a good situation where the goalkeepers are pushing each other, and we are really thankful for the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott behaved this week and the way they also tried to push Benjamin—to help him and support him—which is not… I don’t take it for granted,” he noted.
